چکیده

In this contribution, the direct conversion receiver (DCR) has been revisited and its properties have thoroughly been studied in detail. Contrary to common practice, our main interest is focused on the investigation of DCR performance degradation in conjunction with the processing of ultra-wideband FDM-signals. To this end, all potential DCR error sources have been identified and introduced into a comprehensive error model. This model encompasses delay, gain and phase errors, DC-offsets, bidirectional crosstalk between the input ports of the down-converters and, eventually, quantisation and clipping of the analogue-to-digital interface (ADI). For all of these error sources an exact error analysis has been carried out and, in addition, compact and conveniently applicable formulae and design charts are presented for the evaluation of the isolated impact of each of the various error contributions. Furthermore, a typical error scenario taken from an ultra-wideband application in satellite communications has been used to demonstrate the overall DCR performance degradation as a result of the combination of the most important error contributions. For this application, the major degradations are caused by delay errors that are most pronounced in edge channels, DC-offsets that, however, heavily impair the channel centred about zero frequency only, and gain errors.

Ultra-Wideband Direct Conversion Receivers for Satellite On-Board Processing – System Analysis and Digital Error Compensation –

In this contribution, a direct conversion receiver (DCR), zero IF or homodyne receiver applying in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) sampling has been revisited in conjunction with digital error compensation. Contrary to common practice, our main interest is focused on the investigation of performance degradation in conjunction with the processing of ultra-wideband frequency division multiplex (FDM) signa...

A Comprehensive Performance Analysis of Direct Detection Receivers inWDMASystems

In this work the performance of a wavelength division multiple access (WDMA) system with direct detection receiver is investigated. For this purpose, the probability of error in a WDMA network with OOK modulation considering crosstalk, ISI, photo detector noise and thermal noise is calculated and the effect of each on system performance is investigated. The system performance in presence of PIN...

Comprehensive model-based error analysis of multiple concurrent, time-interleaved, and hybrid ultra-wideband analogue-to-digital conversion

In this paper, a comprehensive parametric error model of ultra-wideband analogueto-digital conversion (ADC) is developed, which can likewise be applied for single ultra-fast ADC, multiple concurrent ADC (MC-ADC), time-interleaved ADC (TIADC) and hybrid ADC (H-ADC) as a combination of TIand MC-ADC. The error model comprises quantisation, overflow saturation, DC-offset, gain error, time delay, an...

Multiuser detection for DS-CDMA UWB in the home environment

We demonstrate the effectiveness of multiuser detection for an ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse based direct sequence spread spectrum system using code division multiple access. Extensive simulations were run using channel soundings of the 2–8 GHz band collected in a residential setting and characterized by a high level of multipath fragmentation. We show that the adaptive minimum mean square error (...

“ Ultra - wideband Radios with Transmitted Reference Methods ” by Yi - Ling Chao CSI - 06 - 04 - 02 USC

Ultra-wideband radio, conveying data by transmitting narrow pulses without carrier, is a promising communication technology. Transmitted reference method can work with cross-correlation receivers, which have simple channel estimation and multipath diversity acquirement as well as low sampling frequency, to make a low cost application available. Optimal and suboptimal single user receivers for u...
